Let's build the food budget together.

One category. One number. Everything else in our life stays exactly as it is. You decide how the $2,500 gets split — I just brought the receipts.

For context, before we start

Every benchmark tops out at $2,200. We're setting ours at $2,500 — above all of them, on purpose. This should feel comfortable, not tight.

What does that cost per day?

Monthly amounts divided by 30.4 days, so every option is easy to compare.

$123/day our recent $3,751 average
$82/day at the $2,500 target
$41/day less than our current pace

At $2,500 per month, we have about $82 a day for food — roughly $41 less per day than our recent pace.

Where should it go?

The middle column is what we've actually been averaging the last two normal months. It's a starting point, not a verdict.

What this one budget does

$1,251
freed up every month
$22,518
over the 18-month countdown
59%
of the monthly card payment, covered by this alone

The card countdown needs about $2,108 a month. This budget covers more than half of it — without touching vacations, the girls, date nights, or anything else. It's the engine of the whole plan.

About July. July's food total was $3,919 — the highest month of the year. About $1,445 of that was the beach trip: Shunk Gulley, Goatfeathers, Publix, the concession stands.* Vacation food is called out separately on purpose. It's not part of this $2,500 and it's not on the chopping block — the trip is protected. Everyday food in May and June ran $3,780 and $3,722, and that's the number this budget is measured against.
